| County, ISD plan to open charter school for inmates |

St. Clair County (Mich.) and the St. Clair County Intermediate School District are joining forces to create a public charter school at the county jail. "In essence, this is going to expand the educational opportunities for those in the center," said Juanita Gittings, a member of the new school's board. "We're pretty excited about this." An organizational meeting for the school was planned for this morning. The school will be set up as a separate district. It will receive the same per-pupil funding other area public schools do through the state's foundation grant. The budget for the school has not yet been set. The charter school will open in the fall in the jail in Port Huron, and then move into the new Intervention Center in Port Huron Township when it's completed in January. It will provide classes year round. The Port Huron Area School District sent a letter to the county in December saying, because of budget cuts, it no longer could provide educational services to inmates. It had provided classroom instruction for juveniles during the school year as well as adult education in the jail. The new academy will provide both. "It's a good partnership between the ISD and the county to offer expanded services," said Cynthia Banach, the ISD's assistant superintendent. Staff will be hired in August, with classes scheduled to start in September. It's not known how many teachers will be hired to run the school, said county Commissioner Pat Anger, R-Clyde Township. County officials are looking to have one teacher for every 10 students, plus teacher's aides. The Intervention Center will replace the jail and the Juvenile Detention Center in Fort Gratiot. |
