SANTA FE, NM - Citizens who are supposed to keep their eyes on the Santa Fe County jail will today recommend steps to county commissioners for improving the county corrections program. Among their advice is: If the jail -- which has a 20 percent staffing shortage -- can't meet safety and security standards, inmates should be released on electronic monitoring. The committee also plans to ask the commissioners to provide more education and counseling programs for inmates, to increase money available for corrections and medical salaries and to hire more case managers.
