Little progress made with prison hearings

PHILADELPHIA, PA - "The system has a crack, and we have to figure out how to fix it."

Those words summed up the conclusions of Councilwoman Marian Tasco, chair of the Council Committee on Public Health and Human Services, after her committee hearing to discuss the problems of the Philadelphia Prison System. According to all the witnesses at the four-hour hearing, the solution to the problems of the prison system, and they are many and dangerous, is simple - more money.

"We learned today there are lots of problems," Tasco said after the hearing. "There are problems in the system that need to be addressed and corrected. If the inmates knew what was going on [with personnel in the prison system], they would be rioting up there." Read more.
