| CA begins inmate transfers |

SACRAMENTO, CA - California began sending inmates out of state to save space in its overcrowded prisons on Friday, flying 80 to a private prison in Tennessee. The charter flight from an airport in Bakersfield was delayed 4 1/2 hours as a federal judge in Sacramento heard arguments in a lawsuit seeking to temporarily block the transfers. The lawsuit, one of three filed over the state's transfer plan, claimed that prisons in other states will not be able to adequately treat mentally ill inmates from California. Read more.
