Maine officials are looking into sentencing practices that have contributed to a rise in the state's inmate population while the crime rate remained level. About 100 people met Feb. 5 to begin a program to look at instituting better management practices for offenders. The meeting was part of a National Institute of Corrections program. Maine and Illinois are the only two states involved in the pilot program. Martin Magnusson is the commissioner of state Department of Corrections. He says too many people are jailed for technical reasons. Magnusson says about 2,000 people are in Maine's prisons. Officials expect that number to rise by at least 100 in the next six months. Magnusson says the state's prisons only have room for 1,800 inmates. |
