SACRAMENTO, CA - When an Associated Press report came out in mid-November noting that the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation had stopped auditing safety measures in prisons, we were aghast. After all, with two prisons in Vacaville, we are exceedingly concerned about safety, both for the inmates and for thousands of men and women who work at California Medial Facility and California State Prison, Solano. The internal audits had been ordered by then-Corrections Secretary Roderick Hickman after Correctional Officer Manuel Gonzalez was killed in January 2005 at the California Institution for Men in Chino. Seven of 41 audits had been conducted by the time Hickman resigned his post in frustration in February, and then audits stopped, the report indicated. But not so, The Reporter has learned.
