| Sheriff honors elevator survivor |

OLYMPIA, WA - The Thurston County Sheriff's Office honored its heroes Wednesday, including Corrections Officer Teresa Benefield, who struggled for 20 minutes with a felon who trapped her in a courthouse elevator March 31 and tried to grab her firearm during a violent struggle. The sheriff's office awarded Benefield a "meritorious service award" for "conspicuous gallantry and heroism" during the struggle for her life. She also was awarded a purple heart for the injuries she sustained during the attack. The injuries required Benefield's hospitalization for 10 days. Read more.
