The Prisons Foundation is a nonprofit organization in Washington, DC that promotes the arts and education in prison as well as alternatives to incarceration.

According to Prisons Foundation president Helen Thorne, a foundation goal is to “make prison art available to everyone, and at the lowest possible price. There is a story behind every print. We want people who acquire and display these beautiful works of art to know who did them, why, and under what conditions, so they can educate friends and colleagues about the humanity and accomplishments of the more than two million men and women behind bars in America.”

As with all Prisons Foundation art sales, a portion of the proceeds go, where permitted, to the inmate artists who typically use them for art supplies and other needs. Many artists have the proceeds sent to family members or to a charity.
