Upset over losing their deep-fried chicken and sweet cakes, inmates at a state prison in Northumberland County, Pa., are threatening a food boycott over the new heart-friendly menu. State prison officials got an inkling last week that inmates at the State Correctional Institution at Coal Township might start refusing to eat cafeteria food this week, system spokeswoman Susan McNaughton said Monday. The new diet cuts back on fried, fatty foods and sugary sweets and adds more healthy selections such as baked chicken, fresh fruit and muffins. Inmates were also concerned the portions were getting smaller, something McNaughton said the prison system is trying to fix. The state began the healthy menus in a pilot program at several prisons late last year and the new diet was implemented at facilities in Coal Township, Waymart and Cresson. Prison officials said they have since added the new menu at facilities statewide, with numerous protests but no hunger strikes. McNaughton said that even if the inmates at Coal Township refused cafeteria food, they would still be able to buy anything they wanted from the prison commissary. "We don't consider anything a hunger strike until nine consecutive meals have been missed," McNaughton said. |
