| New jail would relieve crowding |

BRONX, NY - City Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr. has come out in support of a plan to build a new city prison in The Bronx, saying it would take a “significant burden” off the Rikers Island prison and also eliminate some of the transportation pressure created in Astoria as Rikers visitors travel to the prison. “Since the bridge to Rikers Island connects only to Astoria, my district bears the brunt of traffic and danger coming from that facility,” Vallone said. “Any proposal to shrink our reliance on this old, largely outdated jail would improve the quality of life of my constituents.” Read more.
