A vicious fight between inmates and officers at the state's only maximum-security prison for girls sent two employees to the hospital Sunday night and led to the arrest of two teens. The fight broke out after two girls refused to go to their cells during shower time, according to a state report of the incident. Other girls in the dorm, which usually houses 16 to 18 inmates, then refused to comply as officers tried escorting them to their cells. That prompted the officers to physically restrain the girls "to quell the situation," the report stated. One of the girls threatened to "shank" an officer with a plastic object. She and another girl lashed out, punching and biting and kicking the officers around them. Two of the officers, one of whom suffered a bite to the thigh and another who was kicked in the groin, were transported to Wellington Regional Medical Center, where they were treated and released. Both teens were charged with battery on detention staff, a third-degree felony, and removed from the prison. A conviction could mean additional time behind bars. No other information about the incident, including how many girls overall were involved, was available Tuesday. Isa Diaz, a spokeswoman for the private company that runs the 100-bed prison west of West Palm Beach, said the injured officers are expected to return to work Thursday. She added the inmates have been more combative since the state Department of Juvenile Justice notified Premier Behavioral Solutions late last week that it was on the verge of losing its contract to run the prison. |
