POLK COUNTY, FL - Pressured by the courts to get inmates with severe mental illnesses out of jail faster, the Florida Department of Children and Families goes before a state legislative committee Wednesday in search of funds that would let it open more hospital beds for them. As part of its effort to ease a backlog in moving those inmates out, DCF is asking local facilities whether they have surplus beds that can handle some of the load. Polk County's largest providers of community mental-health treatment, however, say they either don't have beds to spare or that the restrictions DCF would impose are unreasonable. Read more.
