State delays forced reassignment of prison staff

Published: 02/23/2004

The forced reassignment of 260 New York prison employees is on hold. The state postponed the move until the entire prison closing and restructuring plan is settled.
State Correctional Services Commissioner Glenn Goord says the delay will protect the seniority of corrections officers who might seek a transfer or be reassigned in coming months when the state plans to close prisons.
Originally, 245 uniformed and 15 civilian workers at the Watertown, Cape Vincent, Riverview, Marcy, Orleans and Collins prisons were to be reassigned by the end of March. That's now on hold until sometime after the April 1st start of the fiscal year.
The move immediately benefits 105 employees at Camp Pharsalia near Binghamton. The minimum security facility is expected to be closed after April 1st. The delay means those workers will have a chance to fill any vacancies at facilities in Oneida County.
