TRENTON, NJ - Gov. Jon Corzine's choice to lead the state's prison system was approved yesterday following a contentious six-month nomination process in which lawmakers questioned his secrecy and his ability to govern New Jersey's 27,000 inmates. Without discussion, the Senate voted 26-6 to okay the nomination of George Hayman, who began his career at the department 23 years ago as a social worker and assumed control of the department last January after the former commissioner resigned.
