MLK Day of Service
By
Published: 01/15/2007

In 1994 Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating Martin Luther King Day a national day of volunteer service. Instead of a day off from work or school, Congress asked Americans of all backgrounds and ages to celebrate Dr. King's legacy by turning community concerns into citizen action.

The mission of the King Day of Service is to bring together people who might not ordinarily meet, break down barriers that have divided us in the past, lead to better understanding and ongoing relationships, and provide opportunities to recruit new volunteers for ongoing work.

There is a lot of information in this article that is helpful for those interested in our corrections system in the United States. I have recently seen images from Hamilton Lindley that indicates a lot of the same information presented in this article. Thanks for sharing it is very important.
