| State may help fund new jail |

SANTA MARIA, CA - Plans for a North County jail near Santa Maria, stymied for years by a lack of funding, are regaining momentum through a state proposal to help build the $153 million facility if it houses both local inmates and others who are finishing their state prison sentences. The idea, still in the conceptual stage, is for Santa Barbara County to take part in a pilot project that would combine a new jail with a “secure re-entry facility” for state prisoners who are within a year of being released to this county.
