| Inmates wait for mental evaluations |

LAWRENCE, KS - A shortage of beds and evaluators at Larned State Hospital is forcing some mentally ill inmates to sit in jails in Kansas for months, causing trial delays and increasing costs for taxpayers, state officials said. The average wait time for inmates needing a mental health screening is four months, said Abbie Hodgson, spokeswoman for the state Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services. Currently, 57 inmates were awaiting evaluation at Larned, which is the only state hospital with a secure wing for potentially dangerous inmates. Read more.
