Legislature approves tax for jail

HERKIMER, NY - The Herkimer County Legislature Wednesday voted to raise the county's sales tax rate from eight percent to 8.25 percent to help fund the construction of a new correctional facility. The increase, if approved by the New York State Legislature, will take effect on December 1.

It is estimated that the rate increase will generate an additional $1.53 million in annual revenue for the county. The additional sales tax could be in place for 15 to 20 years, the length of time it will take to pay off the bonds that will be issued to finance the construction of a new jail. Read more.
