The arrest rate of juveniles charged with violent crimes has dropped to its lowest level since 1983, the Criminal Justice Newsletter reported Jan. 16.
According to a study by the National Center for Juvenile Justice (NCJJ), the arrest rate of juveniles charged with murder declined 70 percent from 1993, when the rate had hit its peak, to 2001.
However, study author Howard Snyder, director of systems research at NCJJ, cautioned that even though juveniles account for a smaller portion of the nation's crime rate, the proportion remains considerable.
For instance, the report, based on FBI data, found that juveniles comprised 10 percent of all murder arrests; 33 percent of motor-vehicle theft arrests; 31 percent of burglary arrests; 14 percent of all aggravated-assault arrests; 24 percent of robbery arrests; and 23 percent of all weapons arrests.
The 12-page report, "Juvenile Arrests 2001," is available from the Juvenile Justice Clearinghouse, Box 6000, Rockville, MD 20849-6000; 800-851-3420.
