GAINESVILLE, FL - When you're a victim of a robbery, you're supposed to call police, right? That is, unless the item stolen from you is something which could get you arrested for having, and that's the dilemma facing Erik Chu of Gainesville. Chu contacted Gainesville Police and complained that he'd been robbed at gunpoint in a home invasion. As you would expect, police jumped right on the case and in a short time, their major crimes unit made two arrests. Police had extra incentive because of what Chu told them when he complained about the robbery. The item stolen at gunpoint was marijuana, and Chu was quite upfront about it, much to their surprise. Police first arrested 22-year-old Dometris Golston and 25-year-old Jared McCaslin, and both of them are being held in the Alachua County Jail. They, they turned their attention to the man who admitted a crime when he reported one. Police say home invasion robberies involving drugs and not uncommon in Gainesville, home to a large student population at the University of Florida. What is unusual, they say, is someone reporting the robbery and what was taken. Chu told the Gainesville Sun that he was worried for his safety after the robbery, and that he thought it was logical to call police. He admitted having second thoughts after friends questioned his decision. Police still haven't decided if they'll also charge the victim, as well as the robbers. |
