New jail funds approved

CARTER COUNTY, TN - The Carter County Commission approved motions to appropriate $182,000 for Architect J. Mark Rodgers to draw up designs for an alternate jail plan and to fund up to $18 million for the construction of the jail. These and other motions had been passed by the Budget Committee last week.

Rodgers explained details of the alternate plan and gave a slide presentation on the Trussbilt metal panels that would be used in the construction, saving about 10 square feet of space per cell and cutting about $2 million in construction costs while increasing the capacity to 512 beds. He said the operational costs would be cut as well, due to shaving off one floor and less heating and cooling required. Rodgers said that having two designs on the table would also ensure more competition, keeping the construction bids down. Read more.
