| Report: Mentally ill care still flawed |

PORTLAND, ME - The treatment of mentally ill inmates in county jails has improved marginally in recent years, but the programs that exist are fragile and fall far short of what is needed, according to an assessment by advocates for the mentally ill and their families. The report by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Maine said state and local leaders acknowledge that locking up people who act out because of mental illness puts an expensive burden on jails and the taxpayers who support them while also aggravating the illness. Numerous recommendations for improvement generated by a succession of study commissions remain unfulfilled, the report said. Read more.
