The superintendent of a juvenile prison where a 17-year-old died of a burst appendix, allegedly after nurses failed to treat him, resigned Feb. 13. George LaFlam left his position at the Miami-Dade Regional Juvenile Detention Center last week. His resignation comes two weeks after two nurses were charged with third-degree murder and child abuse manslaughter for allegedly skipping examinations or falsifying medical records for Omar Paisley, who died in June 2003. LaFlam did not mention the death in his resignation letter, which was immediately accepted by the Department of Juvenile Justice. Instead he listed achievements during his five years at the youth prison. The department's inspector general suspended an investigation into the teen's death while the state attorney's office considered criminal charges. The internal investigation has since resumed and a report should be completed by the end of the month, said Catherine Arnold, a department spokeswoman. |
