A lawsuit filed against the county by a former San Juan County (N.M.) Detention Center inmate has been settled. An attorney for Nathan Nobles accepted an offer of $375,000 from the county and its insurance company. Nobles was beaten and left for dead by other inmates on April 12, 2002. The 52-year-old suffered head and neck injuries in the beating and was told he would never walk again. Nobles turned his affairs over to his brother-Neil Nobles of Taos-who decided to sue. Nobles was in the jail as a nonviolent offender who faced charges of illegal taking of a motor vehicle and unpaid traffic citations. Several inmates have been convicted of criminal charges in the beating. Nobles lawsuit claimed the detention center was not safe because the staff failed to protect him from harm. |
