Ecuadorean inmates last Wednesday released more than 300 people held for three days inside the capital's main prison during protests to demand freedom for prisoners who have not been convicted. "We have lifted this measure so that all visitors will be freed throughout the day," said prisoner Washington Grueso, who helped organize the protests. Inmates at Quito's Garcia Moreno prison had taken 380 family members "hostage" during visiting hours last Sunday and held them for three days in what has become a common form of protest in this poor nation's crowded prisons. Some women and children were released a day later due to ill health, but inmates refused to free the rest. Prisoners ended the protest after the government promised to study their request to free people who have been held in jail beyond the legal limit allowed without a trial. |
