Federal authorities are investigating the disappearance of cash and personal items from federal prisoners being held in two Michigan jails. One of those jails is in Calhoun County, and the other is in Monroe County. Calhoun County Chief Deputy Marshall Weeks confirmed portions of a story which appeared in the Detroit Free Press on Feb. 12. The story says the Immigration and Naturalization Department has demoted two top officials after claims that illegal immigrants awaiting deportation are missing tens of thousands of dollars in cash and other items. The Calhoun County Jail houses prisoners for INS. Weeks says no county jail employees are part of the investigation. |
