A state corrections officer was arrested on vehicular homicide charges last Sunday, two hours after the car he was driving struck the rear of a pickup, killing a woman who had just pulled out of her driveway, an arrest affidavit states.
Daniel Dwayne Dickerson, 35, of Jacksonville, was arrested at 5 p.m. last Sunday, according to the report filed by Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Cpl. Erik Gonzalez. Authorities found numerous empty prescription bottles inside Dickerson's car, the report states.
Authorities said the 3 p.m. crash occurred as Dickerson was driving his silver 2000 Buick east on State Road 40 near the Northwest 68th Avenue intersection. As Dickerson approached, a 1980 Datsun pickup driven by Nancy Jo Shively pulled out of her driveway.
As she drove the Datsun east on SR 40, Shively's husband - who had just opened the gate so his wife could leave their property - watched as Dickerson's Buick hit the rear of the pickup, which overturned and struck a utility pole, an FHP report states.
Shively was pronounced dead at the scene by a responding paramedic.
Dickerson was also charged with driving in a reckless manner resulting in death.
He's being held in the Marion County Jail under a $10,000 bond, jail officials said,. He and is scheduled to appear this morning at a first appearance hearing, where his official bond will be set.
The report states that Dickerson worked as a Florida Department of Corrections officer in Putnam County, but did not state the name of the prison.
