HELENA, MT Hearings on new state budget bills resumed Tuesday morning with the focus on the state Corrections Department, which saw its proposed budget reduced by $42 million under the plan backed by Republican legislative leaders. Most of that money would have gone to provide for the expected growth in the state's population of criminal offenders. The new budget plan allows for a 4 percent annual growth, but a more realistic number is 7 percent, Mike Ferriter, director of the Department of Corrections. “This bill will put the public at risk,” he said.
