| Law makes searches difficult |

NEW ZEALAND - A law passed by Parliament has made it more difficult to search prisoners and combat contraband smuggling, says Corrections Department chief executive Barry Matthews. An inquiry is under way into allegations that prison staff are involved in smuggling drugs and cellphones into prisons, with officers said to have been intimidated by gang members. Read more.
