GEORGIA - County businessman, Wayne Dasher, has been elected chairman of the Georgia Board of Corrections. He will replace Charles Hudson and oversee the state's prisons. Dasher was initially appointed to the board in February, 2004 by Governor Sonny Perdue. PENNSYLVANIA - Carbon County Prison deputy warden, James Youngkin, 47, became the facility's warden this month after a unanimous vote by the county's prison board. Youngkin, who has worked for the county for 21 years, has been acting warden since Feb. 7, when William Juracka retired. The new warden said there are several things he would like to focus on at the prison, including encouraging more prison officials to work with the court system and parole officers in an effort to keep prison populations down. "Population is increasing here as it is everywhere, he says. We need to look at ways to control it." Youngkin began his career in corrections in 1986 when he became a CO at a former county prison in downtown Jim Thorpe, PA. He was promoted to sergeant in 1988 and to deputy warden in 1995 after the county closed the Jim Thorpe facility. Carbon County Prison currently holds 137 inmates and has a 174-bed capacity. |
