A 19-year-old who walked away from a community corrections center a month ago is facing charges in the death of a teenager killed in a traffic accident early last Sunday.
Lakewood police say Victor Anthony Montoya, 16, was thrown from the bed of a stolen pickup truck. He died as a result of his injuries.
The fatal wreck happened about 12:30 a.m. when the small, gray Dodge pickup collided with a Cadillac near the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Depew Street. The pickup, reported stolen out of Denver, was speeding away after failing to pull over for an Edgewater police officer. The officer had briefly attempted to stop the truck a few blocks away, but was not pursuing the truck when the accident happened, according to Lakewood police.
The truck was carrying nine teenagers, ages 15 to 19. Six were crammed into the cab and three were riding, unrestrained, in the back, said Lakewood Police spokesman Steve Davis.
Two other teens were ejected from the vehicle. At least one sustained serious injuries. Three other occupants, including the suspected driver, ran from the scene. They were located last Sunday afternoon, Davis said.
Police have accused Angelo Anthony Garcia of being behind the wheel. Colorado Bureau of Investigation records show that Garcia was arrested last March on charges including burglary, obstructing police, criminal mischief and trespassing. Convicted of vandalism, he was ordered to serve two years with the Department of Corrections.
A department spokeswoman said Garcia escaped from a community corrections center Jan. 14. A warrant had been issued for his arrest.
He is facing a variety of possible charges, including vehicular homicide. Investigators believe alcohol may have played a role in the crash, Davis said.
