Prison Firing Nurse Over Milk Duds Allegation

An Indiana prison intends to fire a nurse accused of giving two pieces of candy to an inmate -- an allegation the woman denies.
The Pendleton Correctional Facility suspended Tracy Kolb without pay after an officer alleged Kolb gave two Milk Duds to inmate Christopher Truax two weeks ago.
The Indiana Department of Corrections says it has a no-tolerance policy on giving unapproved items to prisoners, which it calls trafficking. The department intends to fire Kolb.
"If it's Milk Duds today, it could be something a little more potent the next day," Department of Corrections spokeswoman Pam Pattison told RTV6's Rafael Sanchez.
Kolb contacted Call 6 for Help, saying the officer who reported he is setting her up. She said the officer is retaliating over a report she made against him weeks ago.
"I am very upset. I want my job back," Kolb said.
The department said Truax also accused Kolb of giving him the candy.
Kolb said she often brought Milk Duds to the prison for personal use. She said the candy also is readily available in staff and visitors' rooms.
The department said it doesn't plan to file criminal charges against Kolb. Truax faces a charge on the accusation that he accepted the candy, Sanchez reported.
Kolb said she plans to appeal her dismissal. Her union said the department broke several policies during its investigation, Sanchez reported.
