The Jefferson County (Ky.) Sheriff's Department is reviewing its policies concerning inmates who are a threat to themselves after a bizarre incident. Joseph Darby, 49, of Louisville, was in a holding cell Feb. 13, awaiting a court hearing, when he ripped out one of his eyes before deputies could subdue him. Darby underwent surgery after the incident, but a University of Louisville Hospital spokeswoman said the eyeball burst and could not be repaired. Darby was awaiting an appearance before Jefferson County Circuit Judge Steve Mershon on a motion to revoke his probation for robbery and assault. Darby had checked himself into Central State Hospital as recently as December, telling doctors he had suicidal thoughts and was hearing things. |
