OSAWATOMIE, KS - Kansas prisons, including Osawatomie Correctional Facility, suspended operations last week to better determine what is working and what improvements could be made to improve security at the state's nine facilities. For the second consecutive year, all state correctional facilities interrupted operations for a 24-hour period Wednesday in order for staff members to participate in a comprehensive review of security procedures and practices. During the stand-down day, only essential inmate activities -- such as meals and medical care -- are provided. Prisoner programs, volunteer activities, exercise and most work details are suspended for the day, but inmate work crews are still allowed to work off site. Read more.
