Carson City, NV - Governor Jim Gibbons appointed Howard Skolnik as the new Director of the Nevada Department of Corrections. Skolnik has replaced Director Glen Whorton, who retired last month.“Howard Skolnik is the right person for the job,” says Gibbons. “His 42 years of experience in almost every aspect of corrections and his 20-year history in Nevada's prison system, combined with his excellent track record within his profession and within his community, qualify him to lead the Department of Corrections to the benefit of all Nevadans.” Skolnik has been the NVDOC's Deputy Director for Industrial Programs since 1987, and served as the Southern Desert Correctional Center Warden. Skolnik was at the Illinois Department of Corrections before moving to Las Vegas 20 years ago. “I am flattered the Governor would select me to lead the Department during this trying time in our history,” Skolnik says. “Our inmate population continues to grow, and to keep up, we're heading into the largest period of construction we've ever seen in Nevada. I'm committed to improving our operations while relying on our existing resources by increasing accountability and realigning reporting structures.” Skolnik has been on several corrections boards and committees, and has led numerous Las Vegas community organizations, including the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce Business Council, the Leadership Council, the Leadership Youth Council and the Boys and Girls Club. He earned his B.A. degree from Ohio State University and his M.S.W. from the University of Illinois. |
