Frankfort, KY Kentucky Department of Corrections Deputy Commissioner James Schomig earned his Certified Corrections Executive (CCE) designation from the American Correctional Association. CCE indicates demonstrated professionalism involving human resources supervision, leadership skills, change management and general knowledge of the corrections profession.“This is a tremendous accomplishment and a significant honor for Jim and this Department,” says KYDOC Commissioner John D. Rees. “Correctional certification is the best process in which an employee in the field of corrections can validate his or her knowledge, skill and understanding of the system. Having the benefit of certification, the knowledge of correctional and modern management techniques, is a tremendous asset especially for one of my top-level administrators. It also provides a strong feeling of self confidence in ones ability to do the job, unlike anything else offered in the field.” Schomig, is a 30-year corrections veteran. He began his career in as a CO at the maximum-security prison, Stateville Correctional Center, in Joliet Illinois. He was a warden of four state prisons, including the 1,800 bed maximum-security prison in Pontiac, Illinois, and oversaw the construction of a 2,000-bed prison in Lawrence County, Ill. In 2002, Schomig joined the Nevada Department of Corrections where he was a warden for two prisons. Since 2005, he has been KYDOC's Deputy Commissioner and oversees all aspects of operation and administration for 13 state and three private prisons. Criteria for the certification include experience, professional accomplishments, and completing a comprehensive examination. The three other Kentuckians who hold this certification include Rees, Kentucky State Reformatory Warden Larry Chandler, and Blackburn Correctional Complex Warden Joe Rion. |
