More than a dozen corrections officers at the Metropolitan Detention Center near Albuquerque, N.M. are accused of attacking and beating up three inmates.
One sources says the incident was captured by security cameras. On Tuesday, three inmates were involved in a disturbance at the Valencia County Detention Center, then transported to the Metropolitan Detention Center. Inside the MDC, more than a dozen corrections officers are accused of beating up those three inmates.
"Upon their arrival, the allegation is that they were mistreated," said Bernalillo County Detention Center Undersheriff Sal Baragiola. "We've launched a criminal investigation into that mistreatment today."
MDC Jail Director Harry Tipton says he was at the jail that night and never heard about the incident, but learned that three inmates from Valencia County were transported to the hospital. He says he asked for the investigation from the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department.
"We hold our staff at very high standards," Tipton said. "We do not tolerate inappropriate conduct of any nature." He also said that if the investigation reveals the need for disciplinary action, that will certainly take place.
