IRONTON, WV - Lawrence County wants to rent 10 beds per day for the next eight months at the Scioto County Jail in Portsmouth to ease overcrowding at the Lawrence County Jail in Ironton. The county jail, located across 5th Street from the Lawrence County Courthouse, was designed to hold 52 prisoners when it opened in 1974. There were 74 prisoners housed there Thursday afternoon, Sheriff Tim Sexton said. Prisoners without a bed have to sleep on a mat on the floor. Read more.
