ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP, IL - The tunnel that leads from the new Kane County jail to the criminal courthouse is eerily quiet for now, but it will be a bustling thoroughfare soon enough. The shell for the new $56 million jail sits vacant adjacent to the criminal justice center on Route 38. Even with two planned six-story inmate housing towers yet to be erected, the 206,956-square-foot structure stands as a reminder of the county's rapid population growth -- and subsequent rise in inmate population.
