RENO, NV - With almost no discussion, the Assembly Select Committee on Corrections, Parole and Probation on Thursday gave its unanimous blessing to the bill designed to get nonviolent inmates out of prison faster. Corrections Director Howard Skolnik estimated AB510 would release 1,600 inmates as soon as it becomes effective and reduce prison population projections by more than 3,800 over the next 10 years. His deputy, Fritz Schlottman, said it would also reduce the parole and probation caseload by 2,000 inmates since the added credits would complete their sentences. Read more.
