COLUMBIA, SC - State Sen. Mike Fair said $1.9 million for the state Corrections Department approved by the Senate Finance Committee would expand a prison facility in Columbia to allow the quicker transfer of state convicts from county jails. That could relieve a backlog of state inmates in Greenville's crowded detention center that has cost taxpayers nearly $86,000 since January, though counties and state correction chief Jon Ozmint would have to work out the details, Fair said.
