Instead of freedom, all one inmate wanted was some cigarettes, police said. While in the medical office of the Somerset County (N.J.) Jail, inmate Darrin Olsen scaled an 8-foot-high wall to enter an area off-limits to inmates, then rifled through a staff member's purse, authorities said Feb. 20. He took three or four cigarettes and a lighter, then climbed back over, authorities said. Olsen left enough of himself behind, however -- fingerprints on the wall -- for detectives to figure out who the culprit was, police said. Two other inmates also identified Olsen, authorities said. Olsen, who was in the correctional facility awaiting trial on burglary charges out of Somerville, now finds himself charged with burglary and theft. Somerset County Sheriff Frank Provenzano said officers are reviewing security to make sure the incident doesn't happen again. He also said inmates often believe they can get away with crimes once they're in the jail, but soon find out that's not the case. "We charge every one of them" with any additional crimes they commit, he said. "They're not skating inside." |
