In early May, corrections staff across the country get the chance to shine.National Correctional Employees week might be called something different from state to state, but one thing remains the same: staff appreciation is at a premium! The Kentucky Department of Corrections holds Southern cookouts, athletic competitions and more. Employees at each agency have the chance to participate in tug-of-war, fishing, and golf competitions with cash prizes for the winners. “We do cookouts and a fish fry,” explains public information officer Cheryl Million. “The staff will bring in their fish fryers and we will cook up the fish that we either caught locally or purchased. And of course we have hamburgers and hotdogs.” Many wardens and deputies will donate their prime parking spaces, which employees can try to win in a drawing. Some facilities also offer family tours, so loved ones have the chance to see the corrections workplace. “Everyone really gets into appreciation week,” Million adds. “We have staff committees that work all year to prepare for this event. We have drawings for cash prizes and local businesses donate gifts too. It's a big deal down here in Kentucky and we couldn't be prouder.” The Delaware Department of Corrections also commemorates personnel with a bounty of food and fun. “This year, we're doing a three-county picnic,” says Gail Stallings, DOC spokesperson. “We're also doing a tailgate lunch. Each day, we go to a different facility and hand out boxed lunches that include a wrap, a salad, a gourmet cookie, chips and a soda. It's a nice little package that we hand deliver.” In Virginia, employees are treated to some down home cooking at the Prince William-Manassas Regional Adult Detention Center, which has celebrated the occasion for the last ten years. PWM officials anticipate serving 800 people in giant tents constructed on the facility grounds. “Our staff has the chance to sit outside and really have a great time,” says PWM Captain Mandy Lambert. “It's just one of our major annual events. We would not have it any other way. Sure it is time consuming and labor-intensive to provide food to so many officers, but it's a chance to mingle with all of the folks we work with. And nobody leaves hungry, I can promise you that!” Loudon County Sheriff's Office another local Virginia corrections agency, offers annual awards that are coveted among workers. “We pick a correctional employee of the year and announce the winner at a big get together we have during staff appreciation week,” says Kraig Troxell, public information officer. “We have everyone vote for the employee of the year, so it is a big honor to be recognized by your peers. We also have a big luncheon that gets a great turnout. We offer a mix of everything from sandwiches to chicken wings to meatballs. It's a great buffet.” Trozell is quick to point out how important each of the 120 employees is to ensuring public safety. “Certainly, these employees aren't on the front line. They don't get the great publicity or headlines that state police and patrollers get. Most of the times, the stories about corrections are about escapes or assaults. That tends to overshadow the excellent work they do every single day. It's a tough position to be in. A patrol deputy arrests someone and only has to drop them off at the facility. But once an offender gets there, corrections has to deal with them every day.” They may not get the headlines or the glory for their diligence and dedication, but corrections staff nationwide will receive the recognition they deserve during a week of honor and celebration. Congratulations to all staff, and enjoy your week. You deserve it! |
