| Prison compromise is a good start |

SACRAMENTO, CA - The agreement that California's legislative leaders reached last week with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to relieve overcrowding in the state's prisons isn't perfect. But waiting for perfection would have meant years more of the partisan gridlock that voters hate and critics of the political process so often bemoan. Instead, this deal is a compromise that should help resolve a short-term crisis while opening the door to long-term reforms. And if two measures that were on the table but ultimately left out of this bargain come to pass, the entire package could prove to be historic. Read more.
