| Sheriff, commissioner clash over jail cost |

JOHNSON COUNTY, KS - Johnson County Commissioner John Segale brought up jail operating costs during a study session April 26 and ended up in a showdown with Sheriff Frank Denning. Segale proposed raising jail inmate boarding fees charged to cities and recouping costs from cities that receive free police dispatch services from the sheriff. Denning opposed the proposals. He said fee increases amounted to a tax and residents already pay taxes for services. He described the raises as a “Band-Aid” that did not address the issue of finding funds for county services and suggested a countywide tax instead. Read more.
