Ban on communion wine reversed

NEW ZEALAND - The Department of Corrections has backed down over its ban on communion wine in prisons. It came about because of provisions of the Corrections Act, which forbids drugs and alcohol in prison.

The acting general manager of the Public Prisons Service, Paul Monk, says the ban on communion wine was an unintended consequence of moves to stop contraband entering prisons.

Mr Monk says it is clear the consumption of a small amount of communion wine will not affect the good order of a prison and can play an invaluable role in rehabilitating some prisoners. He says an exemption will apply to communion wine in prisons, pending an amendment to the Prisons Act.
