| Alabama accepts bid for prison land |

MONTGOMERY, AL - Alabama Department of Corrections officials said Tuesday they will accept the high bid for a 540-acre tract of state land, likely ending a decade-old fight by some Hale County residents who want the land open for public use. Bids were opened on April 18 and the highest -- $1.625 million -- was offered by John Kynard III and Gary Scott Kimbrel of Double K Farms, LLC in Greensboro. The sale had faltered twice before amid allegations of favoritism for coal executive E.A. "Larry" Drummond, whose $1.458 million bid fell short. Read more.
