A former prison warden whose reckless homicide conviction was reversed has filed a lawsuit against prosecutors, state police and the Illinois Department of Corrections. William Barham is the former warden of the Shawnee Correctional Center in southern Illinois. He claims he was wrongly prosecuted for a 2000 car crash that killed fellow prison employee Jerry Isom. Barham was convicted in 2001 of aggravated DUI and reckless homicide. He was sentenced to four years in prison. An Illinois appellate court reversed Barham's sentence in April after it determined there was insufficient evidence to prove he was impaired by alcohol and had been driving recklessly. Barham seeks more than $100,000 in punitive and compensatory damages. Johnson County State's Attorney Brian Trambley says the lawsuit is without merit. |
