| Prison growth likely to be future budget nightmare |

JACKSON, MS - Mississippi had the third-highest incarceration rate in the U.S. in 2005, with 660 prisoners per 100,000 residents, trailing only Louisiana at 797 and Texas at 691. Trailing Mississippi in the nation's top five states for incarceration rates were Oklahoma at 652 and Alabama at 591. On the other end of the scale, Maine had the lowest incarceration rate at 144 per 100,000, trailed by Minnesota at 180, Rhode Island at 189, New Hampshire at 192 and North Dakota at 208. Read more.
