AUSTRALIA - The Western Australian Prison Union says it is lucky a fire at Perth's Hakea Prison did not end tragically because prisons in the state are understaffed and overcrowded. Emergency services were called to the maximum security facility last night after a prisoner set fire to his mattress. Inmates were evacuated from their cells while the fire was extinguished. One prisoner suffered smoke inhalation. The union's Secretary, John Welch, says staff levels need to increase to deal with rising prisoner numbers. "It's really a testament to the professionalism of the staff who were able to deal with the situation swiftly and effectively and ensure that the prisoners, nor anybody else, came to any harm," he said. |
